Currency Design for Social Change
Currency Design for Social Change
How do we solve some of the most pressing challenges that we are faced with today?
A radical new take on the true nature of currency. We will explore different forms and functions currencies can take, along with the social and economic patterns they encode for.
This course is a workshop for activists, entrepreneurs, inventors, artists, designers, and anyone who wants to profoundly shift the systems around us, however large or small.
Course Objectives
In this four-part transformational journey, you’ll be joining currency designer Arthur Brock and his colleagues as they lay out a vision that will forever change how you think about real wealth. This course will not only allow you to grow your own personal understanding of how currencies work, but will give you the practical tools to help transform and positively shape every network and aspect of life that you touch.
You will learn to recognize, analyze, and critique currency in a variety of forms; and balance incentives, constraints, and implications when designing your own currencies.
This course will give you an understanding of the basic concepts of currency design and will teach you how to create your own new currencies.

Welcome, Intro to Class and Goals
-
We begin with a proper, formal introduction to Currency and Wealth, becoming acquainted with their origins, aspirations, and their influence. We explore the blurred lines between Individuals and Collectives, and welcome a new factor for consideration: the Social Organism
-
Delving deeper into the realities of Social Organisms: how they are built & how they maintain self awareness. And how to change the disposition of the social organism by shifting its awareness with currencies.
-
Re-centering on the Human part of the equation, we question what it is that we truly want from a currency. How do we design around our latent desires, innate needs, inherent moral compass, and the whole of what it means to be human.
-
Reflections on the balance of imperatives held in tension. How to ensure the health of our Social Organisms and the enfranchisement of its participants. And where do we go from here.
-
A more technical view of the design rubric: discrete, nested, and amazingly non-exhaustive. …Not for the faint of heart.
-
An hommage to philosophical forerunners, closing thoughts, & further reading.
